McCosker Rocky Speedway Season Opener

A Night of Thrilling Racing

On September 23, 2023, racing enthusiasts gathered at the Rockhampton Showgrounds to witness the highly anticipated return of McCosker Rocky Speedway for the 2023/24 season opener. This exciting event was made possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of a new executive committee who worked tirelessly to ensure the track was ready for action, overcoming challenges such as track repairs and gate maintenance. With the invaluable assistance of Murray Batley from Mac’s Engineering and Maintenance and Hayden Hawkes, the green light for racing was given.

Preparation: Overcoming Challenges

The journey to this season opener was marked by significant preparation efforts. The executive committee undertook extensive repairs to the track fence and gate, recognizing the importance of a safe and well-maintained racing environment. Their commitment to delivering a thrilling experience for both participants and spectators was evident from the start.

Race Results: A Night of Intense Competition

The night featured the first round of Total Car Maintenance Nostalgia Sedans, along with support from local classes including AMCA Nationals, Junior Sedans, Production Sedans, Super Sedans, Super Stockers, and Street Stocks. Over 50 cars took to the track, setting the stage for a quick and sharp opening event. The crowd was treated to some outstanding clean racing, with only a minor incident causing a brief interruption. The efficient management of the event ensured minimal delays throughout the night.

Wrap Up: Acknowledgments and Looking Ahead

The event was made even more memorable thanks to the entertaining commentary by Mark Hogan, one of McCosker Rocky Speedway’s Life Members and Hall of Fame inductees. Mark not only informed the crowd but also added a touch of humor by interviewing the winners and playfully teasing the drivers. His performance was so well-received that many drivers expressed their desire to see him return for future events, including the upcoming RGM Maintenance Group Junior Sedans Piston Cup on October 28.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the dedicated volunteers and sponsors, including McCosker Contracting and Kalka Palms Hotel Motel, whose support played a pivotal role in making these racing events possible.
