Race Report
January 23rd
The roar of the V8 Super Sedans Qld Freightliner Trucks Series was heard again last night in Rockhampton with Round 7. Off the Track there was plenty for the kids as Ricki the Racing Racoon brought his long lost Gorilla brother to the show for a look, bringing with them a mule load if lollies, glow sticks and balls which were signed and kicked over the fence by the drivers. (one local fan favourite Matt Williams some how managed to kick his ball well over the bar building.) However with the action then turned but on track to the Sport Engine Development series Round 6, saw mishaps early in the night. Dempsie Pails had contact with the wall which put him out for the night. Justin Smithwick had a fire, therefore ending the night for him. Plus the Rookie NSSS driver Graeme Elliott who returned home early from that series landed on his roof. However he was the lucky one who was able to return to grid positions later on in the night, including an impressive drive from the back of the pack in the Development grade feature to take 2nd place behind winner Jason Campbell. Back to the Freightliner Truck series now and they too were plagued with problems throughout the night. Top dominating cars like Steve Pearce missing a heat due to front end problems, Rocky "Torr-inator" Craig Torr was looking fast in his still fairly new Rocket until continuing engine dramas retired his night before the A Main. The night was looking SWEET as it belonged to Matt Williams, with an easy win over Gavin Northfield, Steve Pearce and Paul Geary.
Onto the action packed AMCA Nationals. With a full field on track last night there was never a dull moment. Andrew Baker, Rene Frenken, Steve Bickel Glen Boutler and Robert Croydon all showing they are always consistent and spectator pleasing with side by side, nose to tail racing through out the night.
Super Stocker star Danny Lennon actually had things go his way tonight. Since getting this car at the beginning of the season, he has been struck with meeting after meeting of engine dramas. That was all quickly forgotten as he took wins in the heats and the Feature. Second was the ever present Jeff Ohl who has just put in a newer engine and still getting used to a little more horsepower. But don't get confused, this little 6-cyl as always was challenging V8 Lennon every lap of the way as these things with wings keep showing their love and support for local speedway with high car counts every meeting.
The most nail biting moment of the night came in the dying seconds of the meeting. The last half lap, of the last race of the night with the Fender Benders. While running at least 3/4 lap ahead (going clockwise) Beau Saunders lost a massive load of oil and blow the engine. With a putt-putt-putt over the finish line to win by barely a cars length over Heath Simpson. Saunders in his newly painted "his n hers sided" car was clearly the driver of the night in this local tin top division.
On behalf of the Rocky club, THANK YOU to all the Volunteers, Assistants, Officials, Drivers and FANS!! And as always it is an honour and pleasure to be entertained by two of the best commentators in the business, Josh Keene and "SUPER" talker Wes Beadman.
Next meeting is on the 6th Feb.. Can't wait to see you all track side at the bull ring again very soon!
